Created in response to the UN-proclaimed International Year of Light in 2015, the installation Beambox gives audiences the chance to interact with Light Science. The concept involves seven large cubes, each representing a region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Each box moves around on a grid and interacts with the other boxes through LED communication, producing light and sound responses. The installation is a unique opportunity to demonstrate that physics is all around us – even in a playground. Without the need for white lab coats or test tubes, participants get to learn about light and engage with science in a fun and playful way.

A Day at Auckland Live is an education programme that gives primary school aged students a hands-on experience of the performing arts. The programme runs for three weeks each calendar year at Auckland Live’s CBD precinct.

The programme allows participants to see professional artists perform at close quarters, and also provides the opportunity for students to view works redeveloped specifically for their age group. There is a strong emphasis on participation and on introducing young people to the work that happens on the main stage in our theatres.

The students will participate in four mini workshops for Beambox in Aotea Square. Students will also have the opportunity to go inside the ASB Theatre in the Aotea Centre and see how light is an essential part of the theatrical experience with a professional Theatre Lighting Operator showcasing how to create mood and atmosphere on stage.
